Our latest phase of regeneration at Edinburgh’s Pennywell and Muirhouse districts has gone public this month, with the submission of a Planning Application for the neighbourhood centre on behalf of Robertson Group and City of Edinburgh Council. The proposals incorporate civic, retail and commercial uses, on the site of the current Muirhouse Shopping Centre.
Our detailed proposals will see the demolition of the current ‘tired and unattractive’ Muirhouse Shopping centre to create a new key commercial and civic hub within the areas wider residential regeneration.
Our design proposals centre around a new public realm civic square providing a community focus for outdoor activities and events. The square is bounded by new ground floor retail units with residential units above, and a new prominent civic building at the head of the square.
The design of these buildings compliments the new wider residential regeneration being developed by Urban Union and built by Robertson, helping to create an integrated neighbourhood that has a cohesive character and sense of place. The proposals seek to integrate with existing patterns of development such as the adjacent NHS Partnership Centre (due for completion in 2017) and the new Craigroyston High School on Pennywell Road.
Katherine Mackintosh, Managing Director of Robertson Regeneration Ltd, said of the project: “Robertson Group are delighted to be supported by Barton Willmore in the design of this important phase of regeneration within Pennywell. We are all working very closely with City of Edinburgh Council and the local community to ensure that the proposals meet the needs of the community and ensuring that we are creating a sustainable long term neighbourhood centre that the community can benefit from and be proud of”
