News: 14 July 2017Success at the South Coast Property Awards

WestQuay Watermark, the landmark leisure complex at Southampton’s WestQuay centre, has been crowned as Commercial Development of the Year at the South Coast Property Awards 2017.

The scheme, which opened early this year, was created by Hammerson Plc following the success and growth of the adjacent WestQuay shopping centre. Our Planning team secured permission for the development, which also includes significant public realm improvements, linking the retail centre to the rest of the city and harbour with additional pedestrian routes.

The £85 million scheme had a 96% pre-let prior to opening and is set to completely transform Southampton’s leisure and dining offer, having attracted an all new line-up of over 20 restaurants to the City, and the most digitally advanced cinema in Europe.

Now the UK’s largest restaurant and leisure complex, the development is a key project for the continued growth of Southampton, making WestQuay the region’s leading retail, dining and leisure destination on the south coast, which has a catchment of 1.3 million people.

Paul Newton, Planning Partner who worked on the scheme said: “It’s an honour to have been part of this award-winning scheme and fantastic that Watermark WestQuay’s significance to the region has been recognised. Alongside significantly contributing to the status, offer and attractiveness of the city as a regional retail and leisure destination, the complex delivers a vibrant piece of city fabric contributing towards the regeneration of the city centre, particularly the western area which has historically been characterised by vehicular-based retail warehouses.”

Hosted by Jeremy Vine, The South Coast Property Awards ceremony was on 13th July 2017, and brought together the best of the South Coast’s property industry to celebrate the region’s success.

In addition to receiving the prestigious Award, Partner Robin Shepherd, who leads our South Coast team, presented the Town/City of the Year Award, which was awarded to Portsmouth – who celebrated a total of three awards throughout the night.
