News: 21 September 2017The Scottish Planning System – there is no vision

Delegates from across Scotland came together for the 4th annual Scottish Property Conference in Edinburgh, sponsored by Barton Willmore.

The event at The Principle Edinburgh George Hotel featured a presentation from CBRE and Estates Gazette as well as a talk on the Scottish Planning Review by our Partner in Scotland, Stephen Tucker.

During his presentation, Stephen highlighted the need to change the relationship between the public and private sectors and going forward, to develop a culture of partnership to meet house building targets. He also said there was a much greater requirement to plan for and deliver infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, as part of plans to meet increasing housing numbers.

Stephen added: “We have a current planning system that could be made to work.  Legislation and new procedures aside planning lacks vision and often lacks leadership and that’s having a big impact on people’s lives. It's about having ambition and a brave and positive culture so we can all work together for the long-term benefit of this Country.”

The Scottish Property Conference also featured a presentation by Manchester City Council’s Housing Strategy and Partnerships Manager, Steve Sheen, on the steps that have been taken to make the North-West City Centre a better place to live, work and play.

More than 80 delegates attended the event that aimed to look at several of issues such as how is the Scottish real estate marketing performing, where the opportunities are and how the future is looking.
