As Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) unveils its plans to transform Copperas Hill into a vibrant new student destination in the heart of Liverpool City Centre, we are delighted to announce our appointment as planning consultant on the £64m project.
Situated adjacent to Liverpool Lime Street Station, the former Royal Mail Sorting office which closed in 2010, will make way for LJMU’s exciting plans for a Student Life Building and Sports Building, significantly enhancing the student-experience in the City.
Professor Nigel Weatherill, LJMU Vice-Chancellor, said: “Copperas Hill is an area with significant potential for the University to create open pathways and public realm which will connect our two existing campuses in Mount Pleasant and Byrom Street.
“We have taken time to develop the plans for the regeneration of Copperas Hill and we believe we have now arrived at the right approach. The scheme provides for the development of two major LJMU buildings set within new public spaces and landscaped routes. It will transform this area of the City for our student and staff, as well as for the residents and communities around this site."
Planning Director, Greg Dickson said: “The redevelopment of the Copperas Hill site provides Liverpool with a fantastic opportunity to not only deliver landmark buildings at the Gateway to the Knowledge Quarter, but also to a provide a new green and accessible knowledge pathway between Liverpool City Centre, Sensor City and the University Campus. There’s no doubt this will make the area significantly more attractive to those that live, study and work in the City.”
The University is planning to develop the 3 ½ acre site in two phases. Subject to planning approval, phase 1 will the development of two new buildings, a Student Life Building and a Sports Building by summer 2020. These plans form part of a wider masterplan investment across the LJMU estate.
