News: 18 July 2018Our hand illustrated Reading map is back on sale for charity

Our hand illustrated maps, crafted by our Graphic Communications team, were recognised by judges at this year’s Creativepool Awards alongside our redesign of the Scottish Royal Town Planning Institute’s quarterly magazine,

Our  talented Graphic Communications team initially created the fact-filled and eye-catching pieces of art to feature in our new reception area at the Blade when we moved to the centre of Reading in May 2014. But in so doing managed to raise more than £5,000 for charity after copies of the artwork were sold in shops in the Town.

Taking up to a year each to produce, the hand illustrated maps focus on the rich cultural histories of the cities that we are in the heart of; looking beyond the obvious landmarks and into the unique stories and characters that make the places what they are.

Following the success of the initial run of artwork printed in both a giclĂ©e and poster format, the maps are now featured on a tea towel to raise money for our corporate charity, Shelter. Over the last few months we have raised more than £30,000 when ten riders took part in the 120km Raid Pyrenean cycle challenge.

Sammy Brennan, Senior Graphic Designer, said: “Our award-winning hand illustrated maps that feature both historic and new buildings, moments in time and famous events take up to a year to produce. The detail and local references have proven to be extremely popular, and in doing so provided a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for a worthy charity.

“The team of designers are extremely humbled by the response their artwork has received in what was initially a project to liven up the walls in our Reading office.”

Since the creation of the Reading map, the team have created illustrations for Bristol, Manchester and Cambridge, with more cities in the pipeline.

Creativepool is the creative industry network where companies and individuals showcase and share their work, broadcast their news, promote their services and connect. Among the other winners at the Awards were Heineken, Adidas and the BBC Earth – Story of Life app.

You can purchase a copy of the map online by making a donation of £10 here and quoting "Reading map".
