BW Velo and a team of property professionals from the Thames Valley have cycled their way to raising over £30,000 for the homeless charity, Shelter, after completing the world-famous 720km Raid Pyrenean across the South of France.
Ten cyclists from BW Velo, Bell Hammer, CEMEX, Land Improvements Holdings, Grosvenor, A2Dominion and David Morley Architects, finished the epic coast to coast challenge that takes in climbs totalling more than 11,000m, in 98 hours – just within the prescribed 100-hour window.
To add an extra element to the fundraising challenge, each of the amateur cyclists agreed to swap their lovely road bikes for parts of the 720km journey and endure ascents of up to 2,115m on a Shelter branded Brompton folding bike - traditionally used for taking on short, inner-city journeys - kindly donated by Brompton Bicycles.
Now the ride has been completed, the Brompton, will be sold to raise even more money for Shelter at an auction later this summer.
Among those taking part in the cycling adventure, was Business Development Director, Jenni Montgomery. She said: “This was a truly monumental journey with so many highs - a 20km exhilarating descent on the fourth day being my absolute favourite – but also some seriously challenging ‘dig deep’ moments, when the teamwork (both cyclists and support drivers) was unbelievably helpful and heartening. Knowing that we had so many wonderfully generous sponsors and supporters helping us to raise such a fantastic amount of money for Shelter was also a huge motivator for everyone to get over all 18 Cols and complete within the time limit.”
Andy Harris, Director of Income Generation at Shelter said: “We’re so impressed by everyone in the Barton Wilmore cycling team who have done a fantastic job cycling up huge French mountains and in parts on a Brompton bike – these much-needed funds will help us fight homelessness across England.”
