News: 2 October 2019Colleagues to conquer Three Peaks Challenge for Centrepoint

An intrepid group of planners, landscape designers and a graphic designer are taking part in the National Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Centrepoint, the UK's leading youth homelessness charity.

Over the course of 24-hours, the team will walk over 23 miles with a total climb of 10,052 ft across Snowdon in north Wales, Scafell Pike in Cumbria and Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands with the hope of raising more than £1,500.

The team will undertake the challenge on Thursday 17 October and will be made up of:

John Markwell: John has taken his training fairly seriously, running twice a week around Stoke Park in Guildford, where he recently set a 5k Park Run personal best of 22:21. That being said, he has also been sat down watching lots of rugby, eating bacon sandwiches and drinking beer. He is hoping that these two elements of preparation will give him the strength and mental fortitude to defeat the three peaks!

Greg Mahon: As a part-time mountaineer and full-time landscape architect, Greg is at home in the great outdoors. Having already ventured up each of the three peaks via more unconventional routes (and shrouded in cloud for good measure on each and every occasion), he’s hoping that throwing them all together into one 24 hour period will maximise the chances of getting a decent view from at least one of the summits. Fingers crossed!

Andrew Dowell: Andrew has climbed to the summits of Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus in recent years, however, the UK Three Peaks Challenge has been on his to do list for a few years now. Ascending and descending three mountains straight after on another with little sleep and all at a relatively quick pace is a challenge that shouldn’t be taken on lightly. He's looking forward to it!

Rebecca Laughton: Having never taken on a challenge of this magnitude, but spurned on by the chance to raise money to combat youth homelessness, Rebecca’s positive mental attitude will surely get her through. Let’s hope she doesn’t peak too soon.

Neil Purvis: Neil is looking forward to the gruelling 24-hour challenge with the team, to raise money for a fantastic charity. Being from Scotland, he’s particularly looking forward to the Ben Nevis leg, which could make or break him. Here’s hoping a recent trip up Box Hill and regular cycling trips will provide some useful training.

Justin Kenworthy: Justin has climbed Scafell Pike and Snowdon before but has never climbed Ben Nevis nor all three within 24 hours!  It’s one of Justin’s ‘bucket list’ challenges that he’s always wanted to do. To complete this challenge for charity will make completing this challenge even sweeter for him – let’s hope he makes it all the way!!

Jayne Oswald: Climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon have always been a goal of Jayne’s since completing her DofE Gold and she is very excited for the challenge. She will be adopting her strategy that she used through her DofE expeditions of playing ‘Keep on Moving’ by Five on repeat to give her the motivation (especially at 3am on Scafell Pike) to defeat the National 3 Peaks challenge for an amazing charity!

Michel Loftus: Having spent his youth wandering the hills of the Pennines and Lake District, and later years wandering various festival sites, Michael has hung up his walking boots and taken on the task of delivering the intrepid crew of hikers to the base of each of the three peaks

London based Planning Partner Justin Kenworthy said: “This event will be a tough 24 hours, but the challenge facing those in need of shelter, and providing support to those in need is a much longer ambition. That's why we've chosen Centrepoint, the UK's leading youth homelessness charity to support.”

All of the money raised will go towards Centrepoint. They provide housing and support for young people in London, Manchester, Yorkshire and the North East and through partnerships all over the UK. We aim to give homeless young people a future and we want to end youth homelessness.
