Permission under the Gas Act 1965 from the Department of Energy and Climate Change has been secured for a new underground gas storage facility at Saltfleetby in Lincolnshire. The proposed development comprises the drilling of up to 11 new boreholes, the construction of a gas storage facility to process the gas before injection and withdrawal, and associated pipelines between the well sites. The facility, which will convert the UK’s largest onshore gas field at Saltfleetby into 700-800 million m³ of new storage capacity, will increase the UK’s Gas Storage capability by some 15% thereby making a significant contribution to fuel security in the future.
