As part of a 25 year, £700m PFI for Wakefield Council, we led a multi-disciplinary team in the preparation of applications across six separate sites. The largest at South Kirkby has permission for a household waste recycling centre, materials recovery facility, composting facilities, autoclave plant, anaerobic digestion plant and visitor centre.
The latest technology that the facility provides will help to increase recycling rate and divert around 95% of the district’s waste away from landfill.
The 9 hectare facility at South Kirkby has the capacity to deal with a maximum of 240,000 tonnes of waste per year.
Local people were recruited to work on the construction of the new facilities as well as in the operational delivery of the service, making a significant contribution to the local economy.
