News: 5 July 2021Understanding migration from London to the wider South East

The Office for National Statistics published their annual Mid-Year Population Estimates (MYPEs) on 25th June 2021. These MYPEs provide population estimates for the UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for the year ending 30 June 2020.

Here, our Development Economics team have used the MYPEs to determine how many people moved out of Greater London to the Wider South East (WSE). Their analysis provides a picture of where the pressure to deliver London’s unmet housing need will be greatest in the WSE and the authorities with which the Mayor of London should seek to collaborate most closely.

Their analysis is set out in respect of the following individual age groups.

  • Families with young children
  • Families with older children
  • Students and renters
  • First time buyers
  • Homeowners with equity
  • Retirees
