News: 7 June 2017Meanwhile... on You & Yours

Landscape Design Partner, John Haxworth, has featured on BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme, discussing the rise in ‘meanwhile spaces’ as part of a feature on ‘pop-up’ leisure spaces with a variety of mixed-use activities.

Speaking on the show, John said: “what’s become apparent in the past 10 or 15 years, is that forward-looking local authorities have been very proactive in looking at these uses as a way of revitalising their town centres. I think these alternative nights out are generally fuelled by a desire to have new experiences… and after a year or 18 months the spaces can be developed permanently and the meanwhile use can move on and adapt to reflect new ideas that people can test out without huge amounts of money invested in a traditional lease lasting 30 years.”

The rise and popularity of meanwhile spaces and improved/unique public realm is one that our teams have been exploring in recent years, having previously held a panel session with developers of such schemes.
